Problems with Commercial Shoe Polish

Commercial shoe polishes are very dangerous toour respiratory system and the environment. It contains petroleum products, benzenes, carbon based dyes etc.. All of these substances have severe ill effects on the body and are known carcinogens. Be it inhalation or ingestion.

Exposure to little amounts of these substances over a period of time can trigger initiation of cancer process also known as carcinogens. These substances can actually react with the DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) leading to mutations which eventually can lead to uncontrolled cellular growth. For example, inhalation of certain dyes can trigger lung cancer and ingestion of benzenes or nitrates over a period of time can cause stomach cancer. Exposure to such substances is highly unsafe (Chowdary, 2017).

Leucaena leucocephala

Leucaena leucocephala, commonly known as a Lead tree (Ipil-Ipil) is a shrub or small tree growing up to 16 feet in height, its leaves may grow up to 10 inches long. Flowers grow clustered on the end of branches. Individual flowers are white that is turning brown with maturity. Lead tree is a prolific seed producer. The dark brown seed pods are flat, roughly 4 to 6 inches long, with about 20 seeds. Seeds are glossy brown, oval, flat, 6 mm long. (MacDonald et al, 2014)

As stated by Maundu et. al (2018), the Leucaena leucocephala is widely introduced in the tropics over the last 100 years, reaching Africa in 1950. It is also extended to some parts of Kenya with moist ground and warm climate. Ipil-Ipil is related to other plants native to the Philippines such as Mimosa and Acacia.
