The Tyranny of the King of England

During the time of American Revolution and America's fight for freedom the king of England demonstrated tyranny In many instances. The actions taken by the king that were most aggravating to the colonists were the many acts that were passed that dealt with different taxes. The acts put forth such as the Stamp Acts, the Tea Act, and the Intolerable Acts all infuriated the colonists. As we can see the colonists had many reasons to accuse the king of tyranny. By searching the word "tyrant" in the dictionary we see it is defined as " a ruler of a cruel and oppressive character having no restraint by law nor constitution. The oppressive and cruel nature of the king is shown thoroughly by the statements of these acts.

The Stamp Acts of March twenty-second 1765 are an example of the English tyranny instituting taxes without any representation of colonists. These taxes negatively affected many businesses that used printed paper. It also affected merchants because of the legal papers located on their ships. The tax even boiled down to playing cards and others seemingly small and insignificant articles of paper. Another reason the Stamp Act was viewed as such a big insult was the fact that it was a tax instituted purely for the purpose of raising money. In the minds of the colonists the king at this point no longer used taxes to help maintain them. He was now using them to gain profit and revenue. The tax on paper was one of the first steps that lead to the accusation of tyranny that we see in the Declaration of Independance. We see a more oppressive character from the king in this act.

Another instance of tyranny that occurred previous to the declaration is the Tea act. The Tea act was instituted on May tenth 1773. This act exempted the East India company from taxes dealing with the tea.This Act enraged the colonists and shows a very oppressive nature exhibited by the king. By doing this the East India company had a major advantage over the rest of the merchants selling a similar product. This greatly oppressed all of those who were in the same business as the East India company. This was also a very cruel display from the king. If the effects of the act had been what was predicted.
