Preparing for the Journey
November 13, 1802: I have just received a letter from Thomas Jefferson asking me to
be his assistant on an expedition to explore the west. I have accepted this offer, as Thomas is my dear friend. He asked me to be his secretary because I have had six years of experience on the frontier while I was in the army, also I have excellent leadership qualities. I am doing this expedition for the greater good of America and science. There are many unknown species of plants and uncharted territories we have not yet seen. Jefferson has just given me a vocabulary list for the Indian tribes we will meet with on our way, which will be of the most helpful for our encounters. Jefferson picked me for this trip because he knew that I could lead the group of gentlemen that we put together.
January 20, 1803: After receiving that letter, I have been focusing my mind towards learning how to survive. I’m beginning to take medical courses, learning about celestial observation(astronomy), and natural science, or the study of nature. These courses will be necessary to learn in order for us to bring back knowledge of the west. I have had six years in the military, which means I am strong, a leader, and know what is wrong and right. My good friend, William Clark, will be coming with me on my expedition along with 40 other men. The training that I have done and am doing right now will help us greatly.
August 30, 1803: For the past few months we have been gathering a lot of supplies. From everything to an iron boat frame to weapons and knives. In Virginia, I was gathering knives, rifles, tomahawks, and powder. I am taking a course n navigation soon, and also buying scientific equipment to identify new species. At the moment, I am collecting maps, medical supplies, and presents for the Indians we encounter. My friend William Clark will help us create and draw geological features on maps. Soon, we will be selecting men who are worthy for the
expedition, men who knew how to survive in wilderness. We are looking for woodsmen, hunters, carpenters, cooks, gunsmiths, and traders. These men will help us adapt to our surroundings
