1.) Does a people management strategy of care and compassion make sense?
Yes, employees want to feel like they are appreciated and a benefit to the company they work for. Making employees feel welcome and respected in a business will most likely lead to employees working harder, longer, smarter, and stay long-term for the business. A people management strategy is most likely the best strategy for most employees.
2.) How does the practice of keeping employees on the edge impact business in the short and long run?
In the short-term, business will increase tremendously because employees are putting in overtime hours on top of 50 hour weeks. This increase in the workforce for Amazon lead to a huge output increase, and increase in popularity. The long-term impact of keeping employees on the edge is that employees will eventually get burnt out, leave to go work for another company, or get fired. Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos said, “You can work long, hard, or smart, but at Amazon.com, you can’t choose two out of the three.” Long-term stress on employees drove them away from the company.
