What are ‘New Media'?
As a college student, I regard social media and online/video games as new media that I interact with on a regular basis. These new media have been something that I cannot live without. I use my smart phone to access social media such as Facebook or Reddit. I enjoy playing online games with my real world friends and people from different countries.
The most distinctive or important characteristics of new media is real time and massive interact. Recently, I witnessed the power of new media. I recall that Boston Marathon terror attack was on April of 2013. When the cops released photos of the suspect, thousands of social media users mainly distributed to find the suspect over internet and real world. I also believe this was a good example of how ‘new' media is different from ‘old' media because we have to talk about networkability.
A ‘new' media is quite different from ‘old' media in terms of networkability. For example, Boston terror suspect would have never been captured in such a short time period without thousands of ordinary citizens' social media that they accessed through network device such as smartphones.
