Underground Man claims that Direct Man is bound by the laws of nature. According to Underground Man, he describes that the Direct Man acts like a bull who charges “...his object like an infuriated bull with its horns down, and nothing but a wall will stop him” (pg 59). The term “wall” is being associated by Underground Man as the laws of nature. Such like a bull, Direct Man is stopped or pauses at this “wall” because Direct Man can’t or doesn’t try to find any way around it. The Direct Man is bound to the laws of nature according to Underground Man, “Upon my word, they will shout at you, it is no use protesting: it is a case of twice two makes four! Nature does not ask your permission, she has nothing to do with your wishes, and whether you like her laws or dislike them, you are bound to accept her as she is, and consequently all her conclusions” (pg 61). Underground Man is stating that Direct Man lives off of the foundation of the laws of nature, such as mathematics and science.
