A heat exchanger is a device used to transfer heat energy between two or more fluids. Heat exchangers are classified into major categories and one of them being construction. They are classified into two categories regenerative heat exchangers and recuperative heat exchangers.
Recuperative heat exchangers have different flow paths for the cold and hot streams.(some although have more than two streams) The streams are separated at all times by a wall and are in countercurrent flow with each other.
Tube and shell heat exchanger:
This is a type of heat-exchanger that consists of several tubes installed inside a cylindrical shell. The fluids can either flow within the tubes or outside the tubes but still be within the closed shell. The fluids can be either in liquid or gas state. Also their flow inside and outside the tubes can be countercurrent or concurrent.
Heat is transferred from one fluid to the other through the tube walls. The flow of the fluid outside the tube is such that it is directed by means of baffles which increases the flow path and leads to increased contact time.
ADVANTAGES:
1. Are capable of operating over a wide range of temperature and pressure.
2. Have
