The Things They Carried
Thinking Paper
Often times, we have much greater success in comprehending literature when we are able to connect it to something we can understand, such as our own lives, or another piece of literature. In The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, it may be difficult to understand the idea of what is true and what is not true, even though it appears to a black and white concept, in reality it can be much more gray and difficult to identify. He says he watched the sunlight come around him and lift him up and suck him into the trees. Obviously, that is not the real truth. Lemon actually died from a grenade explosion. However, O'Brien tells the reader that the first portrayal is the exact truth as it seemed.
