Reflection paper

The lorax and environmental, economics and politics worldview

Summary

In this reflection paper I will be presenting and writing about the movie lorax by Dr. Seuss which is based on environment and I will be reflecting all the main events of the movie and the characters and the deeper meaning of the movie and what the author is trying to tell us through his movie the lorax and based upon the movie I will be answering some guided questions and also from the chapter environmental, economics and politics worldview in which I will be reflecting and presenting about the economic system, how to deal with environmental problems and some important principles which guide us in making environment policies. And contrasting the relation of the chapter with the movie lorax and also some the recommendation question which is based upon both the chapter and the movie and principles which is applied in the movie and different types of worldview used in the movie by the characters and also there nature importance of the nature and how to develop more sustainable environment in the future not only for us but also for our future generations.

INTEGRATION AND CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF PRINCIPLES:

  1. Capital of economic system, which was affected in the film, was Natural capital, which includes resources and services produced by earth's natural processes, which supports all economies and all life.
  2.  Worldview which was demonstrated by the Once-ler in the film was planetary management because he believes that we are apart from the rest of nature and can manage nature to meet our increasing need and wants. Worldview which was demonstrated by the O’Hare in the film was stewardship as he believes we have an ethical responsibility to be caring managers or stewards, of the earth.
  3. The type of economy that Once-ler practice was market economy which is buying and selling of products and which is more demand and supply of a product. The type of economy that O’Hare practice was government economy.
  4. The kind of economy in terms of system throughput existed during Once-ler was high- throughput economy which attempts to boost economic growth by increasing the flow of natural matter and energy resource through the economic system to produce more goods and services. The kind of economy in terms of system throughput existed during O’Hare was low-throughput economy.
  1. Segments of the film that are violated the principles:
  1. The reversibility principle: As in the film Once-ler started the production of goods and setting up factories because of which indestructible hazardous and toxic waste is produced which is not reversible so this segment of the film is against the principle of reversibility.
  2. The net energy principle: As shown in the movie there are different kinds of machines used to cut down the trees, which consume lots of energy and resources. So I believe this violates or against the net energy principle.
  3. The precautionary principle: According to film because of the use of factories and industrial activities there is so much air and water pollution that it was difficult for the living organism to live in that village. No precaution was taking for the health of the living organism so I believe that this is against the precautionary principle.
  4. The prevention principle: As per the film Once-ler already knows that because his business activities there is lots of damage to the environment but he doesn’t take any preventative measures. So this segment of the film is against the principle of prevention.
  5. The polluter-pays principle: As shown in the film there was no regulations for using economic tools and the only mindset was profit maximization rather they should have used full-cost pricing. So I think this segment was against the principle.
  6. The environmental justice principle: According to the movie there was no environmental policy and environment laws, which should be followed to reduce the environmental problems. So I believe this segment tell that it’s against the principle of environmental justice.

I agree if the follow the environmental wisdom because it states that we are a part of and totally dependent on nature and nature exists for all species. Resources are limited and should not be wasted. We should encourage sustaining forms of economic growth and discourage earth-degrading forms.

  1. Biosphere 2 and Thneedville have some similar characteristic like in both biosphere and thneedville both have life forms like animals and plants but aside from human everything was artificial in both biosphere 2 and thneedville both are created by man as in biosphere oxygen is supplied just like that in thneedville there were oxygen which is sold in the bottles.
  2. The reason behind the success of O’Hare in the thneedville is as people doesn’t know that tress give free oxygen and O’Hare business was going well because of that as he was selling oxygen bottles to the residents of thneedville and he was against the plantation on tress as if people plant more trees his business must be in danger and due to this people has no choice but to buy the oxygen bottles so that’s why O’Hare business was a success.

RECOMMENDFATIONS:

  1. The meaning behind the word the UNLESS left by the lorax on the rock was unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not. That means we have to take the responsibility for our enviornment if we don’t take care of it no one eles will take care,so nothing will get better if we did’nt do better things to safe and preserve our enviornment by using steps of sustainable process.
  2. Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of enoughness states that the earth provides enough to satisfy person’s need but not every person’s greed.

When we take more than we need we are simply taking from each other, borrowing from the future or destroying the enviornment and other species.
