Chapter I
Introduction/ Background of the Study
“You control your future, your destiny. What you think about comes about. By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be. Put your future in good hands - your own” - Mark Victor Hansen. This quotation shared by Mr. Mark victor Hansen simply tells us that a simple and plain paper has a bigger purpose in our life. But let us first define what a paper is.
Paper is one of the most essential materials being used by people in their everyday life. Most often than not, we are taking it for granted. Based on our research, millions of paper is being produced worldwide every day. Yet, have we ever questioned how this is being made and how many billions of pesos are being spent?
The major material in producing paper comes from fibers of cellulose pulp derived from wood, rags or grasses (Wikipedia) and also from trees. We are aware that one of the majority conflicts our world currently faces is the loss of trees due to deforestation. Deforestation is the process wherein human beings cut and remove the trees for furniture purposes, agricultural expansion, livestock ranching, producing different kinds of papers and materials and the likes. Imagine yourself producing a sheet Paper without even using its main source which is the tree. Do you think this is possible? That is why our group will prove to everyone that it is possible to produce paper without harming our mother nature. By using eggshell, water, facial tissue and glue we can now create a single sheet of paper. This will be shown in our science investigatory project. The main difference between the paper we are currently using nowadays and the paper eggshell which will be the output of our experiment is that the Paper Eggshell is more eco-friendly than the usual paper we are using. Also the paper we will make will not be easily covered with water. It will also be beneficial to our environment since we will be recycling used eggshells wherein instead of throwing it away, it can still be used as a source of materials to produce paper.
Statement of the Problem
Deforestation is one of the major concerns here in the Philippines. According to UnderStory.org it is stated that every year about 4.5 to 6 billion or 35% of the total trees cut down in the Philippines just to produce papers. That equates to about 2.47 million trees cut down every day. The main thrust of this investigation is to create an improvised paper using eggshells as its main material to at least lessen deforestation. This Science Investigatory Projects aims to determine the achievability of making a paper out of used eggshells. It intends to answer the following:
1. Is there a significant difference between a normal paper and paper made out of eggshell?
(In terms of quality, texture and price)
2. Will this be useful to students?
3. Is it possible to produce quality paper (smooth and white) using eggshells?
4. Can eggshells be used as the main material in producing a paper?
Significance of the Study
Our group decided to conduct an experiment regarding the alternative source of paper. We are aware that the declining number of trees is one of the major concerns being faced by the entire world. Through this experiment, we can now contribute to at least lessen this concern since the materials we are going to use will not cause any harm to our environment. In this way, it will be beneficial not only to our motherland but also to human beings more specifically to students.
