ABSTRACT

The main objective of conducting this research is to determine the effectiveness of the feeding program implementation on the Grade 7 Severely Wasted students of GLTNHS in terms of; improving at least 70% of severely wasted beneficiaries to normal nutritional status at end of the feeding days, ensuring 85% to 100% classroom attendance of beneficiaries and improving the beneficiaries’ academic performance. This study is particularly advantageous to the General Licerio Topacio National High School, MAPEH Department, TLE Department as they would be able to know if the Feeding Program Implementation effectively reached its goals.

The study only involved 14 Grade 7 Severely Wasted Beneficiaries from different sections of General Licerio Topacio National High School S.Y. 2018-2019. Inquiry letter was used to ask an elicit information or data that is needed in order to answer the problem in this study. Letters were sent to Grade 7 advisers, and to the SBFP Coordinator, Marcelina H. Case. The researchers used survey-questionnaires as an indicator on how the beneficiaries view the feeding program whether it is effective or not. The results of the data-gathered and survey led the researchers to a conclusion that the feeding program implementation is effective by reaching its goals prior to the end of feeding days.

CHAPTER 1

PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND

Malnutrition remains one of the biggest problems in schools in the country. The lack of proper nutrition among pupils negatively affects the physical and mental development. If the children are undernourished or over-nourished, they might find it difficult to focus on the lesson and understand what their teachers are saying. They have poor concentration in class. (Smart Tools, 2012).

Feeding Program is implemented in General Licerio Topacio National High school with the support of the canteen funds and is served to beneficiaries from Monday,Wednesday and Friday for 120 school days.

According to the Health and Nutrition Center (HNC) of DepED, the SBFP aims to (1) rehabilitate at least 70% of severely wasted beneficiaries to normal nutritional status at end of the feeding days; (2) ensure 85% to 100% classroom attendance of beneficiaries. Studies have shown that proper nutrition has a direct effect on student performance and behavior in school. Specific dietary components were shown to have negative effects on this system, many of which are commonplace in school-aged children’s daily eating. (Ross, 2010) So this study, includes the students academic performance, as the nutritional status of a student affects their academic performance.

Although there are rising factors that may affect a student’s BMI, this research is just focusing if the feeding program implementation in GLTNHS effectively achieved its goals in terms of improving nutritional status, class attendance, and academic performance of its Grade 7 beneficiaries. The Grade 7 beneficiaries, themselves take responsibility of their participation on the said program.

As per the studies stated above, the nutrition has a huge role on students’ school and everyday life. The school feeding program aims to contribute in the improvement of its beneficiaries nutritional status, class attendance, and academic performance. As the problems of malnutrition on children arises in our country, fortunately, DepEd has the answer. Though GLTNHS, implemented it, the question is, if the feeding program implementation is effective on Grade 7 beneficiaries, as it has a huge role not just on the improvement of the nutritional status of the beneficiaries but also to their class attendance and academic performance.

This explains the purpose of this study, which is to know if the Feeding Program Implementation in General Licerio Topacio NHS is effective on Grade 7 beneficiaries in terms of nutritional status, class attendance and academic performance.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
