122 CITIES MORTALITY REPORTING SYSTEM

  1. INTRODUCTION TO THE DATA SET

This file contains the complete set of data reported to 122 Cities Mortality Reposting System. The system was retired as of 10/6/2016. While the system was running each week, the vital statistics offices of 122 cities across the United States reported the total number of death certificates processed and the number of those for which pneumonia or influenza was listed as the underlying or contributing cause of death by age group.

The data set includes the age range of under 28 days, 28 days - 1 year, 1-14 years, 15-24 years, 25-44 years, 45-64 years, 65-74 years, 75-84 years, and - 85 years. Mortality data in this table were voluntarily reported from 122 cities in the United States, most of which have populations of more than 100,000. A death is reported by the place of its occurrence and by the week that the death certificate was filed. Fetal deaths are not included, total includes unknown ages, and the average life expectancy of all races and sexes in this time range are also included. In this project, the expected outcome is using data visualization method shows the relationship between mortality number and average life expectancy.

The data source is https://catalog.data.gov/dataset/deaths-in-122-u-s-cities-1962-2016-122-cities-mortality-reporting-system, which was published by center for disease control and prevention.

The data set includes Year, week, week ending date, the number of all deaths, including <1 year old (all cause death), 1-24 years old, 25-44 years old, 45-64 years old, 65+ years old, and the races, sexes, average life expectancy.

There is no data cleansing mechanism was done to this data set.

   From the output of this screen print it can be identified that the average life expectancy of female is higher than males’, even when the time range is year 1914-1918, which known to all the first world war.

  1. What is the connection between pneumonia and influenza deaths and all deaths?

From this screen print it can be identified that the number of pneumonia and influenza deaths has a positive correlation relationship with the number of all death. And this relationship can be identified clearer than the screen print below:

The dashboard represents the change of pneumonia and influenza deaths during this time range, and the web page link on the left represents the change of America population in this time range. In this time range of 26 years the population of these 122 cities changed a lot but the change of pneumonia and influenza deaths keeps stable, which reflects the improvement of the level of medical care and vaccine quality.
