Symbolic Nature: Characteristics
Flannery O’ Connor’s short story Good Country People, explains the symbolic use of names in two active characters, such as Mrs. Freeman and Mrs. Hopewell. The expulsion of the outside world emphasizes the symbolic nature of the names in Freeman and Hopewell. Despite Mrs. Hopewell and Mrs. Freeman being the two active characters, they are not the only main characters in the story, the other main character is the daughter of Mrs. Hopewell named Joy. In both Mrs. Hopewell’s and Mrs. Freeman’s family, there is no such thing as male elements, whether if it’s a son or a parent. Mrs. Freeman's name is used as an irony of her actual freedom, her family is directly played on the status of slaves. Mrs. Freeman is a tenant farmer for Mrs. Hopewell and other property owners, she is a hired hand and a tenant farmer for someone else. However, Mrs. Freeman works in an effective manner, she is so focused on everything that her previous employer warned Mrs. Hopewell that Mrs. Freeman is very nosy. Mrs. Freeman and Mrs. Hopewell prefer to focus on superficial aspects of other people. Mrs. Freeman focuses on what is right in front of her, which is the physical abnormalities of a person.
One of the characters was named Hopewell because she has hope for other people to make the best use as she can of those around her and look down at them with condescending superiority. Mrs. Hopewell is simply capable of doing more than assuming all is well that ends well. Mrs. Hopewell’s name is used as a pun.
