School's Out

You wake up on a beautiful summer morning. Birds are chirping and sunlight is streaming through your window, you can tell it's going to be a good day- and it's only 7:30! You get dressed and then you head to the kitchen. You grab a quick bite to eat, but you have to leave so you brush your teeth and as you're heading out the door you yell out "I'm biking to school, see you later!" Now, I know what you're thinking... Why am I going to school on such a wonderful summer day? No, you didn't flunk a course; you're not in summer school. You attend school all year round. Sounds crazy doesn't it? School... over the summer? But there are year round schools in Canada. In fact, Canada's largest year round school is in Brampton ON. In my speech, I will be discussing the advantages, disadvantages, and my opinion on year round schooling. Who knows, maybe by the end of my speech, school all year might not sound SO bad after all.
Canadian kids go to school around 190 days a year. Here at pine grove we have 2 weeks for winter holidays, 1 week for March break and then those glorious two months during the summer! The idea for the summer break originated a long time ago. The farmers needed their kids to help cultivate the crops over the summer. Times have changed.
Year round schools have the same number of holidays, but they are spread out more throughout the year. The most popular example of year round education is the 45-15 plan. This means students attend school 45 days and then get 15 days off.
There are lots of different reasons why year round schooling is a good idea in this day and age. Some parents and teachers think that we forget a lot of valuable information over the summer holidays. There have been studies showing that students actually forget material within two months....but I can't remember the studies name because I researched it a while
