Statement of Concern
In my position at the University of Utah I currently serve on the Professional Development Committee for Student Affairs. On this committee, we strive to develop and provide opportunities for professional development for all Student Affairs full time staff. My Statement of Concern in which I have chosen to address is the following: “Staff at the University of Utah within Student Affairs are not treated equally throughout departments with regards to professional development opportunities. Why is this the case? What solutions can be created to better serve the professional development needs of all staff within Student Affairs”.
In my review and research within my Statement of Concern I hope to find the answers to the following questions:
- If the goals pertaining to professional development within Student Affairs are applicable to all staff and departments within the division, why are these goals not implemented in a consistent manner?
- What are the channels in which professional development opportunities are being provided?
- Is professional development encouraged within each department from the top down? Is management encouraging opportunities? Or is it that employees are unaware of their supervisor’s opinions regarding professional development opportunities.
- Individual departments are restricted by specific budgeting concerns. What methods and policy can be put into place to ensure a minimum standard for all staff regarding opportunities for professional development?
- What outlying concerns and political motives may be in effect that are contributing to the inequalities of professional development within Student Affairs staff?
Goals and Outcomes
Goals:
It is my goal to speak with a diverse group of staff within varying departments of Student Affairs as well as department heads to resolve the questions stated on page 2. In speaking with these individuals, I hope to gain a better understanding of departmental policy and status regarding professional development as well as where each department stands in regards to budgets and funding.
