MORE THAN MEETS THE EYES

“Class, I’ll be announcing the name of the student who earned the highest grade in our Social Studies Project that you passed last week.” Mrs. Cruz declared at the beginning of our subject.

“For sure, it would again be Sophia/Aron. Have you seen the diorama she/he submitted? It was well detailed. I bet. She/He spent a lot of money in making it. They are filthy rich, you know.” Denise my seatmate murmured.

Everyone seemed to be excited except for me. My father’s recent demise put us in a difficult financial situation. I could hardly go to school and couldn’t cope up with the expenses in complying with my academic requirements.

As expected, Sophia’s/Aron’s name was called. I saw her/his work. It was worth the excellent assessment our teacher gave. Mine was not even fitted to be passed. I just recycled the left over materials I found at school and at home. I received the lowest rank.

Then Sophia/Aron raised her/his hand, stood up for me and spoke “Ma’am, excuse me but something is wrong. I believe that Soledad doesn’t deserve the mark you gave her.”

“Are you questioning our grading system? We follow strict rubrics on neatness and creativity.” our teacher argued.

“No, Ma’am. I’m not putting doubt on our school’s standards. I am just calling your attention on a lesson
