Managing Oneself Reflection
The article I have chosen for my reflection is “Managing Oneself” by Peter F. Drucker. This article is about people learning where they can make the greatest contribution. A key component is self-awareness in your areas of strength. Feedback analysis will show your strengths, areas of competency, and areas where you cannot perform. Bad habits are also identified as performance killers in the article. Bad manners should also be addressed if you plan to be effective in groups. Talented people often fail due to bad or no manners. Knowing the area you cannot perform is just as important as knowing your area of strength. Your valuable time should be devoted to improving your strengths and not devoted to becoming below average in another area.
Once you have defined your strengths, you must decide how you perform the best. Drucker says, "Too many people work in ways that are not their ways, and this almost guarantees nonperformance" (p. 17, 2011). The first point says you must determine if you are a reader or listener. Do you need a script planned or do you need to listen and respond? The second point is to determine how you learn. This could be by writing down notes or by discussing the subject verbally in conversation. Some people work better in groups and other work better alone. Many decision makers are confident in making a swift confident decision. How do you handle stress? Knowing how you perform in all these areas will make you more effective.
Values are listed next as an important factor. Does the company's ethics match up with your ethics? Ethics are not the only factor to consider. A value system encompasses the strategy of the company for short term and long-term growth. In the past, organizations may have told the worker where to contribute. In today's word, that is not the case. You must often decide where and how to contribute based on your particular strengths, values, and how you preform best.
This article has given me insight into my personal approach to the business. Before I read this article, I thought I understood my strengths. I have never used a feedback analysis, so I am not confident
