Labelling Theory, It was said to have began in the early 1950 with the work of people like Becker and Lemert that the symbolic interactionist approach to deviance began to focus on the way in which negative labels get applied and on the consequences of the labeling process. It was then Lemert made a different between primary deviance and secondary Deviance. Primary Deviance is known to be the rule breaking behavior that is being carried out by the people who see themselves and also seen by others as mainly rebellious. Also was mention that rules are been broken for all kinds of reason and situations, to the extents the lemert thought sociology couldn’t develop any general theories in regards to the primary Deviance. Secondary Deviance is said to be a negative label that is given publicly which becomes so powerful can be part of the individual identity said by Lemert. Labelling Theory is also known to be the social reaction theory that is used with formal and informal labeling and its ability to influence criminal, Delinquent or deviant behavior. It is also mention that even with the way the theories are interesting and powerful, it can be somewhat incomplete as they treat human only as social animal with emphasis on communitarian principles.
