THE TELEVISION WAS INVENTED IN 1927, BY A VERY YOUNG MAN WHO GREW UP IN A HOME WITH NO ELECTRICITY. IN 1928, HE GAVE A PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION OF HIS TELEVISION TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC. SLOWLY, TELEVISIONS STARTED TO BE BROUGHT HOME BY AMERICAN’S. IN 1947, IT WAS EASY TO COUNT THE HOMES WITH TELEVISIONS. BY 1957, ALMOST EVERY HOME HAD AT LEAST ONE TELEVISION. IN 2009, IT WAS BELIEVED THAT THE AVERAGE AMERICAN HOME HAD AT LEAST THREE TELEVISIONS IN THEIR HOME. EVEN THOUGH RESEARCHERS SAY THAT THE NUMBER OF TELEVISION SETS IN HOMES HAVE DECLINED OVER RECENT YEARS, IT COULD BE SAFE FOR ONE TO SAY THAT TELEVISION HAS SHAPED THE AMERICAN CULTURE IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE. SOME OF THOSE WAYS CAN BE CONSIDERED POSITIVE. SOME OF THOSE WAYS CAN BE CONSIDERED NEGATIVE. THE ABOVE PICTURE SHOWS A BOY WHO IS “BINGE,” WATCHING TELEVISION. HE ALSO HAS MANY SNACKS READILY AVAILABLE TO HIM. THE CHILD IS ALSO OBESE. IN MY OPINION, THIS IS A VERY GOOD EXAMPLE OF HOW THE CREATION OF TELEVISION AS HELPED SHAPE SOCIETY TODAY.

IN THE EARLY YEARS WHEN THE TELEVISION BECAME POPULAR, PEOPLE WERE STILL PHYSICALLY ACTIVE. JOBS CONSISTED OF WORKING IN THE FIELDS, FACTORIES AND MINES. A LOT CHILDREN STILL WALKED TO SCHOOL AND PLAYED OUTSIDE FROM DUSK UNTIL DAWN DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. PEOPLE WERE HARD WORKERS AND THEIR MORALS WERE BETTER THAN THE THOSE OF KID TODAY. DURING THE FIRST YEARS OF THE TELEVISION, THERE WERE NOT MANY TELEVISION SHOWS THAT WERE FOR CHILDREN. THIS MADE IT VERY SIMPLE TO NOT SIT AND WATCH TELEVISION. HOWEVER, FAMILIES WOULD SPEND THE EVENING WATCHING SHORT SHOWS THAT CAME ON THEIR TELEVISION. THE NUMBER OF HOURS THAT ARE SPENT WATCHING TELEVISION FROM THE INTRODUCTION OF TELEVISION, HAS GREATLY INCREASED. DATA SHOWS THAT NOW CHILDREN WATCH AROUND THIRTY-TWO HOURS PER WEEK WATCHING TELEVISION.

TELEVISIONS ALSO INCREASED THE AMOUNT OF SOCIALIZATION THAT PEOPLE HAD. WITH DIFFERENT SPORTING EVENTS BEING BROADCASTING ON TELEVISION CHANNELS, FAMILIES WOULD HOST TELEVISION PARTIES OR GET TOGETHERS. THERE WOULD ALSO BE TELEVISIONS IN PUBLIC LOCATIONS, SUCH AS BARS AND RESTAURANT’S. THESE LOCATIONS WOULD HOST SPORTS PARTIES AND DIFFERENT THEMED GET TOGETHERS SO THAT PEOPLE WOULD COME AND SOCIALIZE IN ONE GENERAL LOCATION.

ANOTHER WAY THAT TELEVISION HAS CHANGED THE AMERICAN CULTURE, IS THROUGH THE WAY THAT WE EAT AND COOK. A POSITIVE ABOUT IMPACT IN A WAY THAT PERTAINS TO TELEVISION AND THE WAY WE EAT IS THAT TELEVISION OFFERS US A VAST VARIETY OF COOKING CHANNELS AND SHOWS. THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENT SHOWS THAT DEMONSTRATE HOW TO COOK USING DIFFERENT METHODS AND A VARIETY OF FOODS. HOWEVER, STUDIES SHOW THAT EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENT SHOWS AND CHANNELS ABOUT COOKING, THERE HAS BEEN A DECLINE IN HOW MANY PEOPLE COOK. IN 2010, THERE WAS A STUDY DONE BY HARRIS POLL, THAT SHOWED ONLY 40% OF AMERICANS COOK AT HOME MORE THAN FIVE TIMES PER WEEK. IN RECENT YEARS, COOKING SHOWS THAT DEMONSTRATE HOW TO COOK HAVE DECLINED AS WELL. THERE ARE MORE SHOWS THAT ARE MORE ABOUT PEOPLE PERFORMING NEAR IMPOSSIBLE GOALS THAT ARE CENTERED AROUND FOOD. (STAFF, 2004)

WITH THE DECLINE OF MORE AMERICANS COOKING, OF COURSE OBESITY IS ON THE RISE. PEOPLE WANT TO EAT MORE FAST FOODS. PEOPLE EVEN ORDER DELIVERY AND HAVE IT DELIVERED TO THEIR HOMES, NEVER EVEN HAVING TO MOVE FROM IN FRONT OF THEIR TELEVISION. ADULTS AND CHILDREN ALIKE ARE MORE OBESE NOW THEN THEY HAVE BEEN IN YEARS. AS THE PICTURE SHOWS, CHILDREN WOULD RATHER WATCH TELEVISION OR PLAY VIDEO GAMES THAN GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY. ADULTS WOULD RATHER SIT AFTER A LONG DAY AT WORK AND WATCH TELEVISION, RATHER THAN GOING TO THE GYM OR GOING FOR A
