There are many improvements that I can do to become a more effective leader. For me to become a more effective reader, I should learn more. Learning is already something that I love doing daily. Information and knowledge are the most valuable things in the world. Maxwell does an excellent job at explaining the concepts behind being a successful leader. One of the concepts shared by Maxwell that William needs to work on the most is the concept of self-discipline. Maxwell uses an excellent example of explaining self-discipline in Jerry Rice, and how he had God-given talents, but that’s not what made him great. Jerry Rice would work harder than any other professional football player, he had a routine that made him the best player. “No matter how gifted a leader is, his gifts will never reach their maximum potential without the application of self-discipline” (316). The God-given talents and Jerry Rice metaphor is a great way of describing William and his ideas, he tends to always develop potentially great ideas, but is sometimes lacking self-discipline. Applying the concept of self-discipline would help William become a better overall leader in several different ways.
