1) In one of my classes, an assignment required group work and a presentation. I was one of the members and a leader of a 5 member group. At the beginning, I trusted everyone and we got along well. The members were very active and wrote down what they were all assigned to do. However, as time progressed, I started losing trust. Everyone was slacking and not doing the work assigned to them. I realized that it was just me doing work. I tried to gather everyone to get together and finish the assignment. No one replied to any of my emails. When they saw me walking past, they avoided me. I stopped trusting them because of this. Time had passed and I had completed the assignment. I decided to email the professor and let her know that the group was not cooperating. She gave me full points and gave the group members zeros. Right before the presentation date, I got emails from the members saying to get together and figure it out. They had acted like none of this had happened. It didn't help however. I let them know that I was not going to accept any of their last minute work. It came to the day of the presentation and they all had decided to not show up.
2) There are many ways to build trust in a virtual setting. You can start by having a video chat with all the members of your team. Talk about fear and things that make employees nervous. Doing this, you can get to know them as human beings and not just employees. It can also release a lot of tension ad anxiety. Tell them it is okay to make mistakes and also admit your own mistake as a leader (Ryan, 2018) Every mistake is an opportunity to learn. Employers should work with team members and tell them what they can improve on for the next time (Ryan, 2018).
