If Motivation is the reason that drives someone to do something (i.e. a behavior or an activity) then Reward in the other hand, is what you get for doing something rather than the reason for doing it in the first place. In the text book Newstrom claimed that, one form of employee motivation is goal setting. According to him; “Goals setting works as a motivational process because it creates a discrepancy between current and expected performance"(Newstrom 2005 p. 129). In my organization, being a non-profit, employees motivation originates predominantly from intrinsic as opposed to extrinsic rewards (Michelle Renard1 & Robin J. Snelgar). Goals setting has been one of the best methods to get our missionaries be motivated to go to the mission filed in foreign country. One of the primary and most terrifying goals setting task of most missionaries is personal Fundraising. We always seat with missionaries and discuss what their Fundraising goals should be and how they plan to hit them? Doing so, returns to boost their performance and take away that initial shame and fear of asking people to financially support their sacrificial effort to go and service in foreign land, of which according to human eyes, the reward is an intangible and can only be measure has a sense of achievement, or a conscious satisfaction. After coming up with the budget with of the trip, we then set three months goals to raise the entire fund. Within the three-month time frame, the missionary set monthly goal, in the monthly, he set weekly goals then daily goals. As recommended by Andi Gray “Once your employees have set their goals, ask them to put it in writing, sign it and give you a copy. Make sure that you file that copy in a safe place, perhaps their personnel folders. Ask them to keep the original in a place where they can regularly use the information to review progress.” (Gray) and this what will always do, and the result has been more enthusiasm from the missionaries has they raise their fund most time in less than ninety-days for most short-term missionaries.
