I have always been amazed by firefighters. They risk their lives to save strangers. To me, firefighters seem to be completely fearless. Whereas a civilian would instinctively want to run away from fire, a firefighter will run straight towards it.
Firefighting is a very tough job…they need to emotionally and physically strong. No matter what the situation, Firefighters need to be focused…they can’t think of anything else but their duty at hand. They need to be physically strong, because their equipment weighs about 100 lbs.…imagine running into a burning building with 100 extra pounds on your back, and then needing carrying out the person you are saving (no matter their size). Sounds very hard and exhausting, right?
Luckily for them, they don’t need to work all week. Firefighter have breaks called “shifts”, which means they work two, 24-hour days, then they switch with other firefighters in their department, and then have the rest of the week off…shifts also help keep them on their game. Without shifts, by the end of the week, they would be completely and utterly exhausted.
Firefighters do more than you think. They don’t just go around town, getting cats out of trees, or fighting fires. They respond to medical emergencies also. They are dedicated to give everyone the best of service, so if all the ambulances called out on duty, firefighters are the ones who respond to them. 80% of firefighters are trained firefighter paramedics, 15% firefighters not trained medically, and the other 5% are engineers, and captains.
