English is quite unique even among Indo-European languages. It is the most popular language on earth and actually just 8% of the global population speaks it as first language, so what makes this language such charming and useful.

As we all know, English began to spread around the world because of the Industry Revolution, and Britain expand its territories to almost everywhere, much aggressive than the France and Spain. In Africa, there were almost no countries before the British came, all what they got were the tribes. Hundreds even thousands of languages were used on this land, so the British taught them English so even people from different tribes can communicate easily. Similar thing happened in India. There were hundreds of kingdoms before they united together. Although Hindu was widely used, still not accepted by all Indians. So English, a foreign language, became the official language of this nation. The Southeast Asia was completely carved up by big powers, but only English were widely used even those countries were independent.

English actually relies on grammatical structure much less than other Indo-European languages. Word order and propositions become the key understand a paragraph of article. The grammar of English is less complicated than others, but still holds some basic rules. Compare with French and Italian, English is a genderless language, but still use “he” and “she” to identify male and female.

English has a very large amount of vocabulary. As a Chinese, handle 3000 common Chinese characters, you can understand 99% of the daily reading.
