Does South- to- North Water Diversion Program Real Helpful?
The article that I analyzed is “Energy Reduction Effect of the South – to –North Water Diversion Project in China”. There are a couple of author of this article, Zhao Y, Zhu Yongnan, Lin Zhaohui, Wang Jianhua, and He Guohua. The authors published this article in Scientific Reports. In this article, the authors are talking about the energy reduction effect of this massive water diversion program. Moreover, they are mainly focusing on the advantage of the south to north water diversion project (SNWDP), and this program can remit severe water scarcity problem in north China and the over-exploitation problem. In my prospective, I am totally agreeing with the author’s viewpoints because there was a real evidence.
The authors argue that the transferred water will replace about 2.97 billion m^3 of exploited groundwater in 2020, hence reduce energy consumption by 931 million kWh. This mage project will account 27% of the current groundwater withdrawal (YongZhao). I have two reasons to support it. First, the data of 885 groundwater-level monitoring points in north China show that the groundwater-level was 26.7 meters on June 30th, 2017. Surprisingly, after a mouth, the groundwater level was 26.55 meters. Furthermore, this was the first rise in underground water –level in Beijing since 1999 (Tencent). Second, SNWDP is not only a water supply project, but also an ecological project. About nine million people in north China has been using the water from the south and “south water” accounts for more than 50% of the daily water supply in Beijing. This project successfully reduces the exploitation of underground water in north China.
