Binders – a type of bandage specifically designed to fit or support a large body area, such as the abdomen and chest or breasts.
Binders can be simple ,inexpensive and customize by using plain materials such as the triangular sling or they can maybe commercially design which more often easier to use
Importance of Applying Binders
Give the wound extra protection
Rationale:to prevent the wound on the microorganisms that can cause disease and infection
Reduce and prevent edema
Rationale:because of the pressure it helps to prevent edema
Immobilize the body part
Rationale:to avoid the deformity and help to immobilize the affected area
Correct deformity
Rationale:because of the pressure of the binder it helps the affected area correct the deformity
Principles involves in the application of bindersand bandages
Microbiology
Binders are washed and sterilized between uses on different patient when re-cleaned for use.
Psychology and Sociology
Explain the procedure to the patient so the patient has a knowledge about the procedure and the will cooperate while doing the procedure and to establish rapport
Physics
Use equal amount of tension for each turn and prevent friction between against skin surfaces.
Anatomy and Physiology
Position the body part to be bindered in a comfortable position of normal anatomical alignment.
Body Mechanics
When binding extremities, apply bandage first at the distal end and progress toward the trunk to prevent body strain
Safety
Make it sure that the binder is not to tight,to the part of the body to avoid discomfort or irritation to the skin
Factors affecting binder application
Flexibility
The more the flexible the material, the more it can be molded to the contour of the body parts.
Extensibility
Can be stretched out and can be back to its original form.
Body Alignment
Binders can affect respiratory functioning if applied too tight or not secured in place.
Skin Protection
Skin covered must be protected from the effects of warmth, moisture and pressure.
If patient has edema, discoloration or exposed wound edges.
Guidelines in application of binders
• Wash your hands before and after applying or adjusting a binder to prevent spread of infection.
Rationale:to avoid the spreading of microorganisms that can cause disease
• Apply binder firmly enough
Rationale: to give support to the patient in the affected area
• Prevent friction (causes abrasion) by applying gauze or cotton pad.
Rationale:
• Apply binders securely
Rationale: to prevent slippery in clients movement and to make it sure that the affected area was immobilize
• Apply bandage first; distal progress toward the trunk (proximal)
Rationale:to avoid the strain in the body
• Make sure of the correct size of the binder for the patient.
Rationale:to avoid malformation on the affected area because of a binder that are not suitable
• Position pins and knots or ties away from wound or any sensitive organ.
Rationale:to prevent more insult to the affected area
• Rewrap binders every few hours.
Rationale:to make it sure that the binder is in
