Strengths
After reviewing and evaluating the three clusters within the interpersonal domain, (Relationship Management, Communication, and Cultural Effectiveness) communication and its three sub competencies, and how they align with my strengths. As a former assistant to a friend of mines who was running for a congress seat in my state I was his campaign coordinator for his election headquarters, I was in charge of creating his itineraries for his numerous visits to different locations. I not only had to deliver messages to different locations, but also find new places that he could speak at. I was tasked at making sure that all lines of communication between me, the staff, and venue owners were very clear and appropriate. A small mistake such as the mix up of time or the location could cause a negative effect on the campaign. Exchanging organizational information between different departments is very important. Precautions that I took to make sure that everything ran smoothly was to make sure that not only myself, but others showed up at their perspective times for scheduled events, sent out calendar, and email reminders and in some cases if I couldn’t make contact with them verbally over the phone I would send them a text message. Along with not only communicating important information I also had to do a lot of listening. To create the different itineraries that were needed at any time I needed to listen to the suggestions of the venue’s owner. Once I had the structure of the itinerary I contacted other staff members to help complete the itinerary. Listening is very crucial because you need to keep in mind everyone’s time availability in case something happens and a location needs to be moved to help accommodate others.
Weaknesses
After reading and reviewing the three clusters within the interpersonal domain, my weakness would be in global & cultural effectiveness and its three sub competencies. Like most people within an organization, I only know what my functions to the organization are. However, I also lack some of the “knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAOs) needed to value and consider the perspectives and backgrounds of all parties, to interact with others in a global context, and to promote a diverse and inclusive workplace” (SHRM, 2018).
My current job doesn’t involve the duties of me operating in a global environment and advocating for a diverse and inclusive workplace. Similar to business acumen that was discussed in my previous journals), these sub competencies are not things my position handles or is privy to.
Even though this is considered my weakest cluster, I do have strength in operating in a diverse workplace or environment. Because of the amount of different clubs and contests I was in growing up I was given the opportunity to interact with different individuals from a diverse cultures and backgrounds that was different from my own. Having this type of background allowed me to be open and tolerant of others from different walks of life in the workplace today.
